Take a fascinating adventure to Western Mongolia-an untouched heaven of big lakes, high mountains, gorgeous landscapes and the largest diversity of both wild life and ethnicities in Mongolia. The Altai mountain range, with snow-capped peaks of over 3000 meters, waterfalls, ancient burial sites, mountaintop lakes and its nomadic based communities is a great place to explore Mongolia.
Day 1: Arrive Ulaangom
Come to Ulaangom airport and meet local guide.Drive to south about 50km and reach the Lake Blue.Pitch a camp.
Day 2: Day Hike around Blue Lake
Today we hike around blue lake, one of Mongolia's most beautiful sites is a great place for strolling around, enjoying the magnificent sites of crystal blue lake surrounded by amazing flowers and snowed peaks.You will see one of the most beautifull lakes.
Day 3: Drive to Lake Achit
Drive a full day towards to west,see the Achit Nuur.On the way,we will drive through the 'Red Mountain Pass' to 'Uureg' Lake, where you will have a picnic lunch. The lake is home to many kinds of waterfowl which can be viewed from the shore line.Achit Nuur is one of the largest freshwater lakes in Mongolia.There are stunning sunsets and sunrises and good fishing for grayling,lenok,Altai osman and others.You can enjoy seeing spectacular and beautifull landscapes.
Days 4-5: Drive to Altai Tavan Bogd
First day we drive about 150kms and pitch a camp just near Lake Sogoog.Next day, after driving about 140 kms ,we reach our road end.This is home place of Tuvan people,who don’t have any religion.
Day 6: Altai Tavan bogd
With the support of camels, we will trek for 16km to the base camp area at the edge of the 20km long Potanina glacier, that runs down from the highest mountains in Mongolia. We will pitch our camp right here. Tavanbogd means “The Holy Five” referring to the peaks of Huiten (4374m and the highest), Naran, Ulgii, Burget and Nairamdal. It is a stunning setting with the awe inspiring massif of high snow capped peaks.
Day 7: Altai Snow Capped Peaks
We will remain in the same camp and make a day hike up the non-technical heights of Malchin Uul, where we are likely to trek up through snow. There is also a smaller hill nearby allowing for excellent and stunning views of the mountains, mainly into Russian Altai, but in the distance also China.
Days 8-9: Potanii Glacier
Today we trek back alongthe the 20km long Potanina glacier, that runs down from the highest mountains in Mongolia.We have a chance to visit some local nomadic families. Next day we cross Tsaagan River (White River) and trek to Shiveet Hairhan Mountain, where the Tuva people live. Here we will now be able to view the biggest petrolgyphs from the period of the Huns (approx 200 B.C.). The Huns were the reason for the Chinese emperor Qin Shi Huangdi to build the Great Wall of China.
Day 10: Drive to Lake Tolbo
Drive out on the steppe valley towards the Lake Tolbo.Lake Tolbo has crystal clear fresh water and good fishing.
Day 11: Drive to Tavan Belchir
After driving 4-5hrs, we will picth camp just on the north side of Tsamba-Garav Uul(one of the highest snowcapped mountains in Mongolia 4208m).The place called “Tavan Belchir”/Five Pastures/.
Days 12-13: Horse trek to Glaciers and Rocky Mountians
We will ride horses and see the beautifull snowcapped peaks,rocky valleys and crystal clear spring waters.We visit the nomadic Kazakh and Urianhai(one of western Mongolian ethnic groups) families and feel their grade hospitalities. From north west side of the TsambaGarav Uul we have the chance to hike easly closer to snow caps.On the east of TsambaGarav Uul we trek by the narrow beautifull canyon,where is good for fishing.Meet the Kazakh eaglehunter with his Golden Eagle.
Day 14: Drive to Hovd Town
Drive to South and reach Hovd town.Pitch camp near river Buyant.The Hovd town was a trade center,located on the northen Silk Road with connections to Russia and China.In 1763 the Manchu administration built the fortress Sagijn Cherem(Castle).An area of about 4 ha was fenced with 3m high and 2m wide walls.Now all 18 Mongolian ethic groups live in this province.
Days 15-17: Khar Us Nuur National Park
We have 2 days explorations for this national park,where WWF Mongolia is very active.The largest of the lakes is Kahr Us Nuur/Black Water Lake/.We will try local hospitality at Jargalant Harhan Mountian and hike into Rashantiin Am/Spring Valley/,sacred valley.Here is a sacred spring which is being said to have medicinal properties,including for good for yey diseases.The great lakes basin has the largest reedbeds in all of Centrl Asia,with many bird species as well as Saiga Antelope,the rare Wild Boar(in the reeds).,Snow Leopards,Gazelle,Wolves etc.
Day 18: Drive back to Hovd
Drive back to Hovd. Pitch camp near river Buyant.
Day 19: Fly Out
Transfer to the airport and fly to UB approx.3 hrs.
Some recommendations: Summer months in Mongolia are from early June to mid September.Although the Mongolian summers are hot and dry with occasional rain, the temperature can fluctuate as much 20 degrees centigrade between day and night.So be prepared for all weather conditions.
What to bring: Binoculars,sunscreen,a hat,gloves,long underware for travel in the high mountains,comfortable footware,lip balm,sanitary hand wipes,sunglasses,prescription medications,(if needed),rain gear,flashlight.
Transport: This expedition is supported by a jeep or minibus on the Altai Mountian road tracks.
Staff: A Mongolian English speaking local guide will accompany the group at all times. A cook will follow. Plus drivers.
Meals: Our cook will prepare the meals. We pride ourselves in having cooks adapt with both western and Mongolian cooking on our trips. There are always vegetables available, and we have no problem accommodating vegetarians.
Overnights: This is a vehicle supported camping trip. Tents and mattresses will be provided for the camping nights. You need to bring your own sleeping bag. A portable camping shower will be provided.
