The Mongolian Altai mountains of western Mongolian offer a beautiful landscape coupled with three unique cultures - Mongolians, Kazakhs, and Tuvans. The area is rich in wildlife and provides one of the last refuges for the Altai Argali, the world's largest sheep, as well as the endangered Snow Leopard. In addition, western Mongolia is rich in archeological sites that vary from ancient petroglyphs to stone carvings from early Turkish nomads. To travel in western Mongolia and visit this area's nomadic people between the snow covered peaks of the Altai Mountains means to experience something that cannot be repeated anywhere else in the world. On a trip though this region, one discovers new horizons, will feel the beauty of unexplored wilderness and experience the freedom of nomadic life.
Day 1 To Ulgii
Come to airport to catch the flight to Ulgii city.Fly 4hrs.Half an hour refuel stop in Tosontsengel or Moron.Transfer to the Canat’s Riverside Camp,overnight in Kazakh felt gers.Visit the local museum of Ulgii town with comprenhensive information of flora and fauna of Bayan Ulgii aimag as well as it colourfull traditional costumes. Only 15 kgs of luggage is free,each additional kg will cost USD 2.00
Day 2-3 Hatuu Valley
Today we will drive only one and half hour and meet our horserangers.This place is called Hatuu,which means “hard” as so there are many rock.This valley has many archeological sites like rock printings /snowman’s carving/, graves.Some of them are over 5000 years old. Snow capped mountains of valley make many spring waters and small lakes with crystal clear water.Closer to top of valley,you have a chance to see many wild goats/ibex/.
Day 4 To Hongor-Olon
We will picth camp just on the north-west side of Tsamba-Garav Uul(one of the highest snowcapped mountains in Mongolia 4208m).The place called “Hongor-Olon”. There are stunning sunsets and sunrises and good fishing for grayling.
Days 5-7 Tsamba-Garav Uul National Park
Tsamba-Garav Uul(the altitude 4202m) is one of the most beautifull snowcapped mountains in Mongolia.It is just on the border of three western aimags Bayan-Ulgii,Uvs and Hovd.We will see the beautifull snowcapped peaks,rocky valleys and crystal clear spring waters.We visit the nomadic Kazakh and Urianhai(one of western Mongolian ethnic groups) families and feel their grade hospitalities.
Days 8-10 Eaglehunter and Turkic stone
From north west side of the TsambaGarav Uul we have the chance to hike easly closer to snow caps.On the east of TsambaGarav Uul we trek by the narrow beautifull canyon,where is good for fishing.Meet the Kazakh eaglehunter with his Golden Eagle and see the biggest Turkic carved stone in Western Mongolia.
Day 11th To Lake Bayan-Nuur
Today we ride horses by beautifull rocky red mountains From long distance you will see the snow capped Altai mountains and remote wild country.In the end of day, we reach lake Bayan-Nuur.Meet our vehicles and spend overnight.
Day 12 Drive to Ulgii
Drive short day to Ulgii.After lunch, If not on the first day, now we will visit the local sights of this rather ugly town. Instead of a market it has a bazaar, with distinct kazakh ambience, instead of a Buddhist monastery it has a mosque. Stay in Ger Camp,where we see the Kazakh concert with some traditional sings and music.
Day 13 Fly to UB
Transfer to the airport and fly to UB approx.4hrs.
Some recommendations: Summer months in Mongolia are from early June to mid September.Although the Mongolian summers are hot and dry with occasional rain, the temperature can fluctuate as much 20 degrees centigrade between day and night.So be prepared for all weather conditions.
What to bring: Binoculars,sunscreen,a hat,gloves,long underware for travel in the high mountains,comfortable footware,lip balm,sanitary hand wipes,sunglasses,prescription medications,(if needed),rain gear,flashlight.
Transport: We will select some good riding horses , saddle up, and ride. Our gear will be loaded upon Bactrian Camels, used by the locals. Western Mongolian families frequently move from one pasture to the other using camels.The services of some herdsmen will be hired by the expedition, and they will provide us with their animals.
Staff: A local guide who speaks English and Mongolian will accompany the group at all times.A cook will follow, with an assistant.In addition, the services of the local herdsmen will be hired along with their animals.The horsemen follow a traditional lifestyle in the areas where we will be riding.
Meals: Our cook will prepare the meals.We pride ourselves in having cooks adapt to both western and Mongolian cooking on our trips.There are always vegetables available, and we have no problem accommodating vegetarians on our trips.For breakfast we can usually buy fresh yogurt from the herdsmen in the local area.
